Why the erbium-doped fiber amplifier has the largest gain at 1531nm? The energy difference between the metastable state and the ground state of the rare earth element Er(3+) doped in the fiber is equivalent to the energy of the photon of 1550 nm. When the pump light energy (980 nm or 1480 nm) of the appropriate wavelength is absorbed, the electrons will transition from the ground state. To the higher energy level of the excited state.
