Chinese scientists prepare large-scale light quantum computing chips

Chinese researchers prepared large-scale light quantum chips and successfully performed an important analog quantum computation demonstration. According to a study published in the latest issue of the "Scientific Progress" magazine, Shanghai Jiaotong University's Jin Xianmin team produced a 49x49 light quantum computing chip using "femtosecond laser direct writing" technology. Correspondent author Kim Hyun-min told Xinhua News Agency reporters that this is the world's largest light quantum computing chip. The researchers used this chip to demonstrate an algorithmic kernel "quantum random walk" that simulates quantum computation. Kim Hyun-min said that when this quantum evolution system is sufficiently large and can flexibly design its structure, it can achieve a variety of algorithms and computational tasks, performing far better than traditional computers. In recent years, news about general-purpose quantum computers has often been seen in n...

Femtosecond lasers extend glass cleaving to mixed materials

Filamentation cutting is a relatively new process that uses ultrashort-pulse (USP) lasers to cut a wide range of glass substrates, from soft borosilicates to chemically hardened glass used in smartphone displays. Among the advantages of filamentation cutting are the ability to produce curved shapes and cut-outs, cutting speeds up to 2000 mm/s, and superior stress-free edge quality, which eliminates the need for post-processing. The high peak intensity created by a focused USP laser produces self-focusing of the beam because of the nonlinear optical Kerr effect, further increasing power density until, at a certain threshold, a low density plasma is created in the material. This plasma lowers the material refractive index in the center of the beam path and causes the beam to defocus. If the beam focusing optics are properly configured, this focusing/defocusing effect can be balanced to periodically repeat and form a stable filament, which extends over several millimeters in depth throu...

Five photonics trends for 2018

The year is ending, holiday reminders surround us, and after some opulent dinner it is time to think about what may come to us next year. A few trends in photonics such as lidar or additive manufacturing are obvious, others may be less apparent. Here are my picks for photonics trends that might be worth watching in 2018. 2017 was an incredible year for industrial photonics: Market leaders such as Trumpf and IPG Photonics posted double-digit revenue growth, and Coherent seems to do well with the purchase of Rofin Sinar. It is no surprise that fiber lasers conquered more than 40% market share, while the good news for excimer lasers may not be on everybody‘s focus. And thanks to EUV the good old CO2 laser has some new prospects as well. Behind many of the good numbers is a record breaking spending of almost $56 billion for equipment in semiconductor industry. The CEO of Carl Zeiss, Michael Kaschke, spoke of “the most successful fiscal year in the history of Zeiss,” backed by a 25% in...

Concept Metal Products boosts production with second laser cutter

Image
Sheet metal fabrication specialist Concept Metal Products (Middleton, England) has invested in a second Kimla fiber laser system from laser cutting and metal fabrication equipment supplier MBA Engineering (Wetherby, England), after experiencing substantial increases in production from its first machine. Related: Polish laser cutting system manufacturer cracks the Western European market After installing a 10 × 2 m Kimla Powercut 4 kW fiber laser in early 2017, Concept Metal Products was so impressed with the speed and precision of the machine and the resulting cost savings that it installed a second system—a Kimla Powercut LF2040 6 kW fiber laser. Kimla's fiber laser systems have a small footprint to save valuable factory floor space and reduce costs per square meter, and cut to a 0.03 mm accuracy.
