Chinese scientists prepare large-scale light quantum computing chips

Chinese researchers prepared large-scale light quantum chips and successfully performed an important analog quantum computation demonstration. According to a study published in the latest issue of the "Scientific Progress" magazine, Shanghai Jiaotong University's Jin Xianmin team produced a 49x49 light quantum computing chip using "femtosecond laser direct writing" technology. Correspondent author Kim Hyun-min told Xinhua News Agency reporters that this is the world's largest light quantum computing chip. The researchers used this chip to demonstrate an algorithmic kernel "quantum random walk" that simulates quantum computation. Kim Hyun-min said that when this quantum evolution system is sufficiently large and can flexibly design its structure, it can achieve a variety of algorithms and computational tasks, performing far better than traditional computers. Shedding high-power laser light on the plasma density limit

The interaction of high-power laser light sources with matter has given rise to numerous applications including; fast ion acceleration; intense X-ray, gamma-ray, positron and neutron generation; and fast-ignition-based laser fusion. These applications require an understanding of energy absorption and momentum transfer from the high-intensity lasers to plasma particles. A group of Japanese researchers led by Osaka University has proposed that substances heated with high-power lasers produce an ultrahigh pressure plasma state, comparable with those found at the centers of stars, and that the surface tension of the plasma can push back light. Since lasers with energies capable of heating material sufficiently to create this pressure had not been available to date, the process had not been considered. High-power Cutting System Design

One of the most important aspects of beam delivery for a high-power laser system is the beam purge. Beam purge can be defined as a low flow of clean, dry air or nitrogen that is introduced into the enclosed laser beam path. This flow of gas keeps a positive pressure inside the enclosed beam path to keep contaminants (particulate or vapors) out of the path of the laser beam. A good beam purge is required to obtain consistent performance from any laser system, regardless of the power level; at power levels higher than 3,000 watts, it is absolutely essential because problems created by poor-quality beam purge often are magnified at these power levels. On any CO2 laser system, a number of external optics are used to transport the unfocused raw beam from the laser source to the workpiece. Ultrafast, high-intensity lasers improve understanding of chiral molecules

The starting signal is given and two electrons speed off in opposite directions. The one that wins the race is barely seven attoseconds (7 x 10exp-18 seconds) ahead. The difference is so small that up till now it has been impossible to measure. Yet, that difference is caused by chirality, a hallmark of molecules that emit electrons. An international research team (INRS/CNRS/CEA/UPMC/University of Bordeaux/Weizmann Institute) made this precise measurement by directing an ultrafast laser beam at camphor molecules. Theoretical equations predicted the result, but as one of the authors of the research article published in Science explains, no one has been able to prove it before. Laser light show scheduled to achieve Guinness World Records title

To celebrate its tenth anniversary, laser light show and laser system design specialist ER Productions (Dartford, Kent, England) will attempt a Guinness World Records title for the largest laser show at Live Design International (LDI) in Las Vegas at 7:30 pm on Saturday 18 November on the LDI: Live outside stage. ER Productions plans to use over 300 lasers as part of a 30-minute laser showcase that will culminate in a seven-minute finale to achieve the Guinness World Records largest laser show accolade. The title attempt will feature a live performance from British DJ, Damian Gee, who will soundtrack the event at LDI, North America’s largest trade show for the live entertainment technology and design industry.
